I LOVED A RUIN

I loved a ruin,
A broken heart I thought I could mend,
An abyss I threw myself into,
Thinking I’d find shelter there.

I loved a mirage,
A love that only existed through me,
A fire I kept feeding
While you looked the other way.

I dug graves for our promises,
I prayed for a "we"
In a language you no longer spoke.
And yet, I still believe.

Because love is that, isn’t it?
A knife we hold against our own skin,
Hoping it will spare us in the end.
